The Six Characteristics of Shorinji Kempo

  • Unity of the Mind and Body
You will re-discover your body, your mind, and their connection.
  • Force and Compassion Stand Together
Students learn the need for a balance between force and compassion.
  • Defense is Primary, Offense is Secondary
Usually, it is forbidden in Shorinji Kempo to attack first.
  • Protect Yourself Without Causing Permanent Injury to Your Attacker
Shorinji Kempo is very effective as a way of stopping violence. It has been designed so that a practitioner can immobilize an opponent without causing permanent injury to the agressor.
  • Unity of Hard and Soft Techniques
Hard techniques (punching, blocking, and kicking) and soft techniques (grappling, throwing, and releasing a hold) work best when used together.
  • Pair Work is Fundamental
Cooperation and harmony with other people are required and stressed while learning Shorinji Kempo techniques and philosophy.
